John Allen Caughey

John Allen Caughey, 82, of Bartonville, formerly of Walnut Point, Mapleton passed away peacefully on Monday, January 9th, 2023, in Bartonville while in hospice care at his daughter’s home. Born August 28th, 1940, in Peoria, Illinois to John and Evelyn (Bourlet) Caughey. He married Bonnie Barnette in October of 1962 in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Chris (Dave) Geary of Bartonville, one son, John Anthony Caughey of Ashland, Illinois; two grandsons, Edward Lajon Murray of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jerrod Tyler Murray of Bartonville; one great granddaughter, Charley; one brother, Robert of Farmington and many nieces and nephews and a special cousin, Roland Behrens of Spring Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Buddy Allen Caughey; three siblings, Terrance Caughey, Pamela Rathbun, Joyce Kammerer; sister-in-law, Sharon Caughey, and son-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Murray. He attended Manual High School then went on to become a veteran of the United States Army where he was part of the Military Police, an expert (pistol), sharpshooter (rifle), and a marksman (carbine). He was honorably discharged September of 1961. He later went to college at night on the GI Bill, taking electronic classes. He had worked at his father’s gas station, Coca-Cola, and then went on to work for 47 years at Cilco/AES/Ameren until retiring in 2013. Known as Bud to many, John enjoyed Cardinal baseball and Chicago bear Football teams. His hobbies included fishing at Blue Lakes of Canton, playing softball, weightlifting, and bodybuilding with family, friends, and coworkers. John also took pleasure in coaching his daughter’s teams and taking her to dance lessons. In later years, he was busy with his grandsons’ lives, never missing a game or activity of theirs. At a later date, a small church service at Christ Lutheran where he attended school and church will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to AUI/DBA Riser Court for his son’s group home activity projects at 400 E Mechanic St, Ashland, IL, 62612.
